Volunteers contribute £10 million worth of services for the public
In the last year the Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS) has helped over 80,000 people with their pension problems and complaints, and recovered £7 million worth of additional pension payments and compensation. This would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of over 300 individual volunteers who give their time so freely, as well as the support of many corporate partners.
As part of National Volunteer Week, which takes place between 1 and 7 June 2013, TPAS is calling on pension professionals and providers to pledge their support and help the service continue to provide free help and guidance on pension matters to the public.
The contribution of volunteers in running this vital service is estimated to be in the region of almost £10 million. Additionally, TPAS is supported by a number of organisations from across the pensions industry who offer their knowledge and legal advice, as well as many suppliers who support the organisation through ad-hoc pro bono work, depending on their area of expertise.
Individual volunteers and organisations contribute to the work of TPAS to make pensions accessible for everyone, through a number of ways. This includes investigating pension complaints, answering calls on our helpline from our London office, providing professional advice on legal matters and specific cases, as well providing training for our staff on topical pension issues.
Usha Madan, a helpline volunteer for over 5 years and the TPAS Volunteer of the Year in 2012 said;
“I've found it a very rewarding experience helping people to understand pensions and resolve their pension problems. I've been able to explain pensions to people from all walks of life and ensure they get a better income in retirement.”
Marta Phillips OBE CA, Chief Executive of the Pensions Advisory Service said:
“On behalf of members of the public who need the help of our volunteers, we are really grateful for their dedication to helping others. In the year of our 30th anniversary we are carrying out a small number of events to thank our volunteers for all the hard work they do.”
