International Volunteer Day

International Volunteer Day is a United Nations event held every 5th December to celebrate and promote the efforts and values of volunteers. For over 30 years we have been helping people with their pension problems and questions. We have been incredibly fortunate to benefit from the work of so many volunteers along the way.

This International Volunteer Day we want to say a huge thank you to both our current dedicated team of 380 volunteers and all those who have been part of the journey over the years. Our volunteers come from a number of different pensions backgrounds, kindly giving their time and expertise for free. Because of their generous service, TPAS can add an extra £2.5m in resources annually, allowing us to help even more people with their pensions.

Using volunteers increases the expertise available and brings in a wider diversity of skills than an organisation may otherwise be able to afford. Volunteering can help individuals find routes back into employment, improve CVs, gain access to training, improve technical knowledge and develop softer skills.  For example, our volunteers learn about pension products they might not otherwise encounter in their day-to-day working lives and improve softer skills such as communication techniques and dealing with difficult customers; skills, knowledge and experiences that employers find valuable in their staff.

Our volunteers have a number of roles within TPAS from investigating and helping resolve complaints, to answering questions on our helpline. If you would like to know more about volunteering with us watch our video of former Pensions Minister Sir Steve Webb explaining why he decided to volunteer for TPAS.
