Happy 4th July
Today is Independence Day; our cousins on the other side of the pond will be celebrating in style. It was actually 2nd July in 1776 when 13 American colonies declared independence from Britain – it must have taken them 2 days to organise the party.
Other countries that celebrate 4th July include the Philippines (Republic Day) Rwanda (Liberation Day - the end of the 1994 Rwandan Civil War ) and a national park in Denmark that holds the largest celebration outside the US (I have no idea why!). India also has an Independence Day, which is the 15th August.
At TPAS, we are very proud of our role as providers of independent and impartial guidance. Over the last 12 months, we have had visits from delegations from the Netherlands, Albania, Japan and China who are also considering offering similar services in their countries.
The visit from the Shanghai delegation was particularly memorable. At the end of the presentation and the tour of the offices, we had a Q&A session. Through the translator, one delegate asked how we could be independent if we were a Government department funded by taxes. Strictly speaking, we are not a Government department and, while our grant is paid by the DWP, our money comes from the industry. You could say that we are an industry co-operative.
The question was a good reminder how lucky we are to be able to offer our service to people who may not otherwise be able to access help. We believe that we can be the foundation level of knowledge to give people the questions to ask themselves and others. Working with the industry is very important to us that together, we must all work together to give people confidence in the long term savings market.
