Live Longer, Move Abroad

I was listening to Nick Buettner who has found pockets of people around the world with the highest life expectancy. I think that you will be surprised with the list.

  • Barbagia region of Sardinia
  • Ikaria, Greece
  • Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica
  • Loma Linda, California and
  • Okinawa, Japan

His organisation, Blue Zones, has studied these regions to discover what makes people live longer and has come up with 9 findings.

  1. Move Naturally – don’t go to the gym but make exercise a normal part of your day e.g. towns set up with paths so that you walk to work.
  2. Purpose - knowing your sense of purpose is worth a whooping 7 years of extra life expectancy!
  3. Down Shift – take time out, religions that have a rest day have better life expectancy.
  4. 80% Rule – or “Hara hachi bu” in Japanese. Stop eating when you are 80% full. The 20% gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between losing weight or gaining it.
  5. Plant diet – beans means…..
  6. Wine – regular 2 glasses per day rather than 14 drinks on Saturday.
  7. Belong – be part of a faith-based community. Not sure Facebook counts.
  8. Loved Ones First - put your family first.
  9. Right Tribe – for all of the above being what all your community are doing. Basically, you need 5 friends who behave the same as you to live a long time.

If all of this has got you thinking that you would like to live in Barbagia, Loma Linda or Okinawa, you should read our new spotlight on the website – Living Abroad. The spotlight is aimed at those retiring abroad and those who are living/working or thinking about moving abroad. It talks about the pension related issues.
