Labor or Labour day?

Labor Day in the United States is celebrated on the first Monday in September and it is considered the unofficial end of summer. However, the UK and 80 other countries celebrate Labour (International Workers' Day) on May 1; the ancient European holiday of May Day.

The UK spring bank holiday on the first Monday in May is a fairly recent addition to our bank holiday calendar, created in 1978. There has been talk of scrapping this bank holiday associated with May Day and replacing it with Trafalgar Day; celebrated on October 21.

So what about the missing or additional “u” in Labor/Labour? You only have to read LinkedIn for a few minutes to read that companies are about the people who work for them; so there is very much a “U” in Labour day. Yet, we have very little regard for the employer’s role in providing a pension scheme; which is effectively pay (deferred) for “U”. How many of us calculate our pay adding in the employer contribution into the pension scheme?

What about keeping tabs on all your workplace pension schemes especially where you have been automatically enrolled. Chances are that your contact details are your employment email address so, when you leave, contact through that method will be rejected without you knowing. So on this coming LaboUr day, why not think about changing the contact details from your E(mployment)mail to Umail (your personal email address) to help keep track of all your pensions when your circumstances change.

You can find out more about the importance of keeping track of your pensions and what to do if you think you might have lost a pension here.
