Pension contributions may not be top of most parents’ checklist but it is worth looking into this crucial area. Employment law is clear that women on maternity leave cannot be discriminated against and have the same right to pension contributions from their employer as their colleagues. Usually the employer pays based on earnings prior to the period of ordinary maternity leave and the employee pays in based on their maternity pay. Most schemes also allow the member to make up any gaps in contributions when they return to work after maternity leave.
