Self-employed and Pensions
Self-employed and Pensions: How we can help
We have been helping consumers to better understand their pensions for over 35 years. We provide the public service of independent and impartial guidance on all pension matters.
We are piloting a new service aimed at supporting self-employed people with the particular retirement issues they face. The results of our pilot will be used to help develop our service and we will share a summary of our findings with Government and others in the pension industry to help improve and inform how best to help self-employed people to save for their future. The summary will be anonymised and contain no personal data. We would really like you to take part in this pilot.
Please read on for more information.
We are offering you a Midlife Review of your pensions and retirement planning. The purpose of the review is for you to talk about your pension situation and your aspirations for later life.
The Midlife Review is a telephone appointment, which will be held at a time of your choosing with a TPAS pension specialist. The appointment will be a conversation about your personal circumstances, which may cover your current financial, work, family and health situation. This will help us identify if you’re on track or how you might be able to make your pension and retirement goals more achievable.
- dedicated time and guidance on your pension and retirement plans with a pension specialist and
- be sent a summary of the appointment providing all the key points and information
You can read the rest of this page and our frequently asked questions for more information about the Midlife review and the research process.
Is it right for me?
We are happy to help anyone who wants to talk about their pension and future plans. This pilot is best suited to those aged 40 to 50, who are self-employed.
If you’re a little younger or older, you may still benefit from having a conversation with a specialist. We are able to talk to you about any pension issue or question so please do contact us.
How to take part?
If you would like to take part and book a Midlife Review, please email Virtual.Appointments@pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk confirming your interest.
When emailing, please provide your name and contact email address, so that we can email you with further information and organise the appointment. We will aim to contact you within 2 working days.
We never contact you without your prior permission, so please be wary of any unsolicited contact from organisations regarding your pension. You can find out more about this here.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
You’ll be receiving free, independent and impartial help and guidance from specialists who have upwards of 10 years’ experience in pensions. They’ll be able to help you think through your next steps and give you the tools to build your pension planning further.
What will I have to do?
All you’ll need to do for your Midlife Review is talk to our pension specialists about your personal and pension situation. We’ll ask you some questions to help understand what your retirement and pension goals are so that we can provide you with some actionable next steps as a result.
We will also ask you to fill out a short survey before and after your appointment so that we can analyse how helpful you found it.
What will happen to the results of the Midlife Review pilot?
The results of our pilot will be used to help develop our service and we will share a summary of our findings with Government and others in the pension industry to help improve and inform how best to help self-employed people to save for their future. The summary will be anonymised and contain no personal data. We plan to share the results of the pilot in Autumn 2018.
What about my data?
This service is in pilot stage and will undergo independent evaluation to assess the results so that we can understand the impact of the support on people’s retirement provision. We are therefore asking for your consent for us to collect, store and process your data. In booking a Midlife Review appointment with us, you are agreeing to take part in all pilot activities and for us to use your data in this way.
After independent evaluation, the results will be used to produce a summary report that will be shared with Government and others in the pension industry to help improve and inform how best to develop pension savings amongst self-employed people. Any data used within the report will be anonymised so that you cannot be identified. To find out more about how your data will be collected and retained please click here.
