If you have opted out of your employer’s workplace pension scheme, or stopped paying contributions, you can rejoin the scheme at a later date.

How can I rejoin my employer’s scheme?

If you have opted out of your employer’s workplace pension scheme, or stopped paying contributions, your employer is required to automatically enrol you back into the scheme at a later date (normally every three years after their staging date), provided that you are an eligible jobholder at that time. This is known as re-enrolment. Your employer will contact you to tell you the contributions payable and to give you the options available to you.

The reason that your employer has to re-enrol you into the scheme is because your circumstances may have changed and a workplace pension may now be right for you. If you’re not ready to rejoin, you can opt out again. You can also decide to opt in at any time by speaking to your employer.

If you’re not an eligible jobholder, or you don’t want to wait to be automatically enrolled, you can ask to rejoin at any time, provided that you’re either a non-eligible jobholder or an entitled worker. But, your employer only has to action a request to rejoin once every twelve months. If you’re an entitled worker when you ask to rejoin, you may not be able to rejoin the employer’s automatic enrolment workplace pension scheme and, your employer doesn’t have to pay contributions to your pension scheme.

If you opt out, or stop contributions, and then ask to rejoin, your employer may not have to action your request to rejoin – employers only have to action one request to rejoin from each member every twelve months.

Frequently asked...

Why does my employer only have to action one request to rejoin every twelve months?

Every time a member leaves or rejoins a scheme incurs administration costs for the employer, so this measure is intended to limit such costs. Your employer may choose to accept more than one request from you to rejoin in a twelve month period, but you only have the right to rejoin once in a twelve month period (provided you are eligible to rejoin).
