How Will It Be Paid?

Payment Day

This depends on whether you reach your State Pension Age (SPA) before or after 6 April 2010.

Before 6 April 2010

Your state pension became payable from the first Monday following your SPA.  It is then paid every Monday thereafter.

On Or After 6 April 2010

Your payment date is linked to your National Insurance Number.  The table below shows the allocated paydays.  Your state pension becomes payable on the first allocated payday following your SPA.  It is then paid each week on your allocated payday thereafter.

Last 2 numbers of NI number Payday
00 to 19 Monday
20 to 39 Tuesday
40 to 59 Wednesday
60 to 79 Thursday
80 to 99 Friday

So, if your NI number ends with 56, your state pension will begin on the first Wednesday after your SPA.

Payment Method

The government changed the system of payment so that all pensions from the state and pension credit are paid direct into your bank, building society or Post Office account, instead of by order book or giro-cheque.
