Ballot papers have been sent out by Bectu and the National Union
of Journalists representing BBC members asking for strike action
over a pensions dispute. The BBC announced in June that it plans to
overhaul its pension scheme to try and tackle a £2bn
deficit.
The BBC plans to close its existing final-salary scheme to new
joiners and restrict future rises in pensionable salaries of
existing members to one per cent a year.
If members vote to strike, industrial action could take place as
early as 9th September and Luke Crawley, assistant
general secretary of Bectu, warned that viewers could be left
watching "dark screens" if the strike action was to go ahead.
