New Pensions Minister announced

08 June 2009

Angela Eagle has succeeded Rosie Winterton as pensions minister following the cabinet reshuffle. Winterton - who had only been in the role since October last year - was appointed minister of state for regional economic development and co-ordination.

Eagle, who is MP for Wallasey, takes over her responsibilities at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) immediately. She was formerly exchequer secretary to the treasury.

Winterton's departure followed the resignation of work and pensions secretary James Purnell and his subsequent replacement by the former chief secretary to the treasury Yvette Cooper.
