MPs call for end of 65 retirement age

29 June 2009

The Commons and Work and Pensions Select Committee are due to publish a report in July which is expected to call for the compulsory age of 65 to be abolished. The report suggests that forcing people to retire on their 65th birthday is exacerbating the pensions crisis.

However, businesses are expected to resist the move at it will stifle their ability to replace older, higher paid workers with younger, cheaper staff.
