New Rules for Voluntary NI scheme

08 April 2009

The DWP Pension Service has now published detailed information on the extension of the voluntary NI scheme announced in last year's Pensions Act.

The new rules will generally apply to anyone who fulfils the following two conditions:

(1) Has reached State Pension age between 6 April 2008 and 5 April 2015; AND

(2) Already has 20 qualifying years (including any years of Home Responsibilities Protection)

A short basic FAQ is available here:
http://www.pensionservice.gov.uk/state-pension/basic/faqs.asp

There are also two detailed factsheets now published, which include the relevant steps individuals need to take and the appropriate contact details. The appropriate factsheet will depend on when you reach state pension age.

Factsheet 1: How to increase your State Pension if you reach State Pension age between 6 April 2008 and 5 April 2010.

Factsheet 2: How to increase your State Pension if you reach State Pension age between 6 April 2010 and 5 April 2015.
