Alliance Boots has announced that it could close its final
salary pension scheme to its existing 16,000 members. Alliance
Boots currently employs 93,000 people worldwide and Executive
Chairman Stefano Pessina said that no decision had yet been reached
on closure, with alternative options for the pension scheme also
being considered.
Mr Pessina said: "Most of these pension schemes have been closed
many years ago. At the end of the day it is also unfair because you
have a big cost to benefit a small part of your people and you can
use that money to distribute the benefits to everybody in a fair
way."
