The Advocate-General, senior adviser to the European Court of
Justice (ECJ), has decided that current British law which allows
employers to compel workers to retire at 65 is not
discriminatory.
The case, brought by Heyday - part of Age Concern - was prompted
by a survey of 60,000 people, with 80% claiming the current rules
were unfair. The Advocate - General's decision is not binding but
could influence the European Court of Justice which will give its
ruling just before Christmas.
