Women told to top up NI now

26 November 2008

Experts have warned that women wishing to top up their basic state pension should do so now before a 50% hike in buying back National Insurance (NI) contributions, introduced by the Government, comes into force in April. The rise means that each year of missing NI purchased will cost £626.60 against the current £421.20

To qualify for a full basic state pension, women have to have 39 years of full NI contributions (either paid or credited) where their State Pension Age is before the 6 April 2010 and 30 years where their State Pension Age is on or after the 6 April 2010.
