Pensioners could boost their income by claiming state benefits,
to which they are entitled. Help the Aged says 1.82 million do not
claim Pension Credit, while a further 2.4 million are missing out
on Council Tax Benefit.
Pension Credit comes in two parts, a guarantee credit once you
reach 60 and a savings credit at 65. Pension Credit guarantees
those aged 60 and over a current weekly income of £124.05 if
you are single, or £189.35 for couples. Also, if you or your
partner are 65 or over you may be rewarded for saving for your
retirement, up to a current:
.£19.71 a week if you are single
.£26.13 a week if you have a partner
If you are eligible for Pension Credit, you automatically
receive a claim form for Council Tax Benefit. If not, you could
still be eligible if you are over 60 but you would have to contact
your local authority for details.
