Millions don't claim pension credit

13 November 2008

Pensioners could boost their income by claiming state benefits, to which they are entitled. Help the Aged says 1.82 million do not claim Pension Credit, while a further 2.4 million are missing out on Council Tax Benefit.
Pension Credit comes in two parts, a guarantee credit once you reach 60 and a savings credit at 65. Pension Credit guarantees those aged 60 and over a current weekly income of £124.05 if you are single, or £189.35 for couples. Also, if you or your partner are 65 or over you may be rewarded for saving for your retirement, up to a current:

.£19.71 a week if you are single
.£26.13 a week if you have a partner

If you are eligible for Pension Credit, you automatically receive a claim form for Council Tax Benefit. If not, you could still be eligible if you are over 60 but you would have to contact your local authority for details.

To apply for Pension Credit call 0800 99 1234.
