State pension age must rise

31 July 2008

According to Lord Turner, the state retirement age will have to be raised and people remain in employment until they are 70 if the basic state pension is to survive into the next century.

Although Lord Turner initialised radical reforms which will increase the current age of retirement from 65 to 68 by 2046, he has now claimed that life expectancy issues mean that people will have to work longer than he proposed.
