Equitable claimants face further delay

16 July 2008

Chancellor Alistair Darling has instructed lawyers to examine the Parliamentary Ombudsman's report on the Equitable Life collapse and is expected to wait until the House of Commons returns from its summer break before making a decision on claims for compensation.

In the Parliamentary Ombudsman's report, expected to be published tomorrow, Ann Abraham is expected to recommend that the Government makes good the losses incurred by Equitable policyholders but, according to sources, she will not include a figure for the amount that should be paid. She is expected to say that the amount of compensation will depend on individual circumstances.
