Postal workers reject scheme changes

02 April 2008

A postal strike looks likely following yesterday's vote by postal workers. Two thirds of the Communication Workers Union's 141,000 Royal Mail members took part in the ballot. 92% rejected the company's plans to close its final salary pension scheme to new members and increase retirement age by five years to 65.

The proposed changes will include opening a new scheme that will pay benefits based on career-average earnings and are aimed at reducing the fund's £5bn deficit.
