Equitable Life members face further disappointment

29 October 2007

Ann Abraham, the Parliamentary Ombudsman, who is investigating the rights to compensation for Equitable Life members, is due to tell MPs she is still unable to publish her findings.

In the summer of 2004, a full investigation was launched to look at the role of the Government Actuary's Department (GAD) in the near-collapse of Equitable Life. Despite being told to expect a decision on compensation within a year, member support groups are still waiting.

In May, Ms Abraham informed MPs of a delay as she struggled through a large draft report response. A spokesperson for Ms Abraham has now said that Ms Abraham is unable to commit to a timetable for publication.

The Equitable Life members' support group has said that the delay is "appalling".
