TPAS concern over web 'piggybackers'

02 August 2007

TPAS Chief Executive, Malcolm McLean warns that firms selling pension products have set up web sites to "piggyback" on The Pensions Advisory Service's name and reputation.

Three new sites - which have web addresses very similar to TPAS's - have been registered this year and mean any unsuspecting browser looking for free general pensions information could end up viewing pages dedicated to selling pension products.

Mr McLean said: "We are taking legal advice because this is completely unacceptable to us. We were first made aware of the problem when I mentioned our state pension age calculator, which is available online, on a television programme."

Mr McLean went on to say that the differences in the web addresses were very subtle and easy to confuse with TPAS's official website of www.pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk.
