Rail workers call off strike over proposed pension changes

16 August 2007

Rail workers have called off a strike over proposed changes to ill-health pension benefits.

Members of the National Union Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers overwhelmingly voted to strike over proposed plans to change ill-health pension entitlement at the Transport for London Pension Fund.

Because members have now received guarantees that no attempt will be made to introduce cost-cutting changes that would deprive most people who leave work through ill-health of their pensions, the strike has now been called off.

Under the proposed change, if the scheme member could earn an income, even if they could not continue in their previous post, they would have stood to lose their ill-health pension.
