Former Allied Steel and Wire workers have lodged a claim with
the European Court of Justice to reclaim pensions lost when the
firm went bust.
More than 800 staff at Allied Steel and Wire lost their jobs,
and most of their pensions, when the company folded in July 2002.
In a two-hour hearing at the European Court of Justice in
Luxembourg this week, unions representing the workers argued that
successive UK Government failed to protect their savings by failing
to properly implement the European Insolvency Directive, which
should have been done by 1983.
The case was brought jointly by the unions Community and Amicus,
and a decision is not expected for several months.
