2.6m Retirees Will Work Beyond Age 65

21 July 2006

Research published by Prudential UK reveals a "new age" of retirement is dawning, as nearly half of all Brits approaching retirement intend to keep working in paid employment beyond the current state pension age of 65.

According to the research, two in five people in Britain aged between 50-64 say they intend to keep working past the current state pension age which for those aged 50 or over is still 65.

In addition, 22 per cent of those Brits (1.4 million people) say they do not know when, if ever, they will retire. The findings point to a "new age" of retirement - one which is moving away from a set age to stop working, towards a more flexible approach.
