State Pension Entitlement

Dear TPAS

I am 61. I would like to stop working at 63. I have paid full NI contributions since the age of 15. Will I be entitled to a full state pension at 65, even if I stop working at 63.

Answer

To qualify for the full basic state pension, you need to have paid, or been credited with having paid, NI contributions for at least 30 years.

If you will have a full NI contribution history up to the age of 63, when you decide to stop working, you will have accrued the 30 years you need. You are therefore likely to receive the full basic state pension.

I suggest you contact The Pension Service and request a state pension forecast. The forecast will tell you what you have built up to date and, if you are unlikely to qualify for the full basic state pension, what you can do to plug any gaps.

A state pension forecast is available by calling 0845 300 0168 or you can apply online by clicking here.
