We run an independent information and guidance helpline from our
office in London. The helpline is manned by paid staff who
are assisted by a selection of carefully chosen
volunteers.
If you are an active or retired pensions professional and have
some spare time during the week, why not help us
out. After receiving training, you will be set to answer
pensions-related questions from individuals and employers.
Is It Worthwhile?
One of our long-standing volunteers has given the following
feedback about his experiences working on the helpline one day a
week.
"The opportunity to work in a lively office environment and
discuss issues with TPAS staff and other volunteers.
"The opportunity to make a positive contribution to the work
of the TPAS Head Office.
"The satisfaction of really 'making a difference' to some of
our callers.
"There is a wonderful unpredictability about the nature of
the calls and so we have the opportunity to use our experience and
judgement to deal with a wide variety of situations (e.g. tearful,
angry, aggressive, incomprehensible or over-inquisitive callers),
in all cases using tact and diplomacy.
"The opportunity to learn more about State Benefits. (These
form a high percentage of calls and cover areas that the volunteers
may not have been involved in professionally.)
"The opportunity to develop skills of verbally explaining
technical issues in plain English.
"The learning opportunity when we have to consult a member
of staff about a technical query to which we don't know the
answer.
"A potentially valuable addition to the CV.
